Band of Crusaders Expands to GOG: A Gamescom Discovery Worth Watching

Today, Virtual Alchemy announced an exciting partnership with GOG to bring their classic-inspired strategy RPG, Band of Crusaders, to even more RPG and strategy fans. Together with GOG, the Poland-based indie studio aims to expand their game’s reach, following enthusiastic feedback from players. This partnership opens up a new platform for the game, alongside its existing presence on Steam.

How We Met

During my trip to Cologne for Devcom 2024 and Gamescom 2024, I came across many fantastic projects, one of which was Band of Crusaders, developed by Virtual Alchemy, a Polish indie studio. Conferences like these are more than just 9-to-5 events. With so many great things happening, you can’t help but keep exploring, even after the expo doors close. This game discovery was a prime example of that curiosity.

Poland had an absolutely massive national stand in the B2B area this year, showcasing dozens of game projects. My schedule was packed, so I decided to take a different approach. Each year, Polish officials host the Gamescom Polish Party—a networking event that is technically held on Polish soil, as it takes place at the ambassador’s residence. I received an invitation and decided to seize the opportunity, searching for hidden gems in the indie scene. It was here that I met Dominik Sypnicki, CEO of Virtual Alchemy, who showed me Band of Crusaders right in the garden. The monsters and dark medieval setting instantly grabbed my attention.

Band of Crusaders – A Game of Dark Lore

Band of Crusaders draws heavily from classic strategy RPGs but offers a fresh twist on the formula. The game combines real-time tactical combat with a unique Slow Motion mechanic—an evolved version of the classic Real-Time with Pause system that fans of Baldur’s Gate or Dragon Age: Origins will be familiar with. This allows players to command a party of medieval warriors (each individually) through a world filled with dark, atmospheric landscapes and fearsome enemies.

What sets Band of Crusaders apart is its deep commitment to world-building. The game’s lore is steeped in European and Slavic folklore, drawing on a rich source of myths and legends. The demons, for example, are inspired by both local folklore and biblical motifs. Art Director Kamil Mickiewicz was also at the event, and he explained that some demons are drawn from the “very soil of Europe,” embodying twisted human or animal forms, often merged with plant life or elements of the earth. Others take a more metaphorical approach, personifying biblical themes like the Seven Deadly Sins.

This blend of folklore and medieval history gives Band of Crusaders a truly unique aesthetic. The environments are haunting and evocative, with ruined villages, eerie forests, and mist-covered battlefields creating a sense of foreboding at every turn. If you’re a fan of games like The Witcher, you’ll feel right at home in the world of Band of Crusaders. The game doesn’t just present a backdrop for the action but rather pulls you into a distorted medieval Europe, where you, as a regular human, are crusading against very real demons.

What the GOG Partnership Means

This partnership with GOG opens up new opportunities for Virtual Alchemy, bringing their game to a wider audience of RPG and strategy lovers. GOG, known for its DRM-free approach and commitment to preserving the classics, offers a platform where indie studios can thrive. The partnership highlights the growing influence of community feedback, as it was players who voiced their desire to see Band of Crusaders on GOG. Now, those players will have the choice to play the game on their preferred platform, be it Steam or GOG.

Why Supporting Indie Studios Matters

Supporting indie studios, especially in the early stages, is vital for fostering creativity and innovation in the gaming industry. During these early phases, developers are brimming with ideas and enthusiasm, unburdened by large budgets or external obligations. This is the time when they can take the most risks, experiment with fresh mechanics, and craft unique narratives that set their games apart from larger, more formulaic projects. It’s crucial to extend this period of creative freedom as long as possible, allowing developers to fully realize their vision.

Consider the success stories of games like Hades, Hollow Knight, and Celeste—each of these indie titles began as small, passion-driven projects and went on to captivate the gaming community worldwide. What helped fuel their success was early community support: players sharing the games, wishlisting them, and spreading the word long before they hit the mainstream. This kind of support gives developers the momentum to push forward, refining their games without the pressures of big studios or publishers looming over them.

In the case of Band of Crusaders, your support can make a real difference. By wishlisting the game on GOG or Steam, or even by sharing news about it with fellow RPG fans, you can help the devs extend their creative freedom and bring their ideas to life. These seemingly small actions have a real impact, ensuring that indie studios like Virtual Alchemy can keep creating the unique, engaging experiences we all love.
