EVE Fanfest Saga – Part 5: Leaving the Dreamland

The time had come to bring my EVE Fanfest Saga and Icelandic adventure to a close. To those who have followed the journey thus far, I extend my respect. And for those who have arrived here by chance, the beginning of this Saga awaits you here.

The Final Moments in Iceland

The morning of September 24, 2023, in Iceland was cloaked in a somber gray. Thick clouds armored the sky, and the northern wind howled across the land. After my final breakfast at the hotel, I boarded a bus bound for the southern part of Reykjavík. My destination: the Sky Lagoon, a geothermal spa known for its open-air hot springs.

Lagoon by the Ocean

The entrance to the lagoon was unlike anything I had seen before—rolling grass-covered hills shaped into stark, asymmetrical forms. Inside, a sleek and modern interior unfolded before me, a contrast to the raw landscape beyond. Passing through the changing area, I descended into a cavern, its warm waters swirling at my feet. As I moved forward, I emerged from the rock passage into an open-air lagoon.

The temperature shift was staggering. The water held steady at 40 degrees Celsius, while the harsh Icelandic wind, blowing at a mere 7 degrees above freezing, whipped across the surface. The sensation was unlike anything I had experienced before—like sitting by a roaring fireplace with a cup of tea while a blizzard rages outside, except here, I was in the heart of the storm, yet untouched by its bite. If there is one thing I would urge every traveler to experience, it is this: the embrace of Iceland’s geothermal waters beneath an open sky.

Drifting to the lagoon’s edge, I let my hands rest on the ledge of a hot waterfall and gazed out at the restless Atlantic Ocean, mere meters away. A sight so surreal, it felt like a dream.

The Ritual

Within the lagoon, a bar offered drinks to those who sought them, though my attention was drawn elsewhere—to a series of chambers known as the Ritual. Seven steps of cleansing awaited those who dared: dry and steam saunas, cold showers, and a salt-infused scrub.

A panoramic sauna with a glass wall overlooking the ocean.

The dry sauna, perched upon a cliff, featured an entire wall of glass—a massive window spanning nearly ten meters diagonally. Inside, silence reigned supreme; no noise from the outside world penetrated its sanctuary. I sat in the heat, watching the waves crash against the distant shore while an airplane glided noiselessly across the sky. It was so cinematic, so perfectly composed, that for a fleeting moment, I wondered if I was staring at a vast screen displaying an illusion, not real window.

A Journey to Keflavík

Refreshed and renewed, I set off toward my final destination before departure: the coastal town of Keflavík, located 50 kilometers southwest of Reykjavík. A small settlement of about 16,000 residents, Keflavík was once a fishing hub, later transformed into a military base for U.S. forces until their departure in 2006. Today, its legacy endures through its international airport, bearing the same name.

By the time I arrived, the rain had begun to fall. The streets emptied, leaving me alone with my thoughts and my camera. I wandered along the coast, watching seagulls battle the wind, the waves crashing in a rhythmic, untamed symphony. The moment was bittersweet—behind me, new friendships and memories; ahead, the promise of home and family.

During my walk, I encountered only one other person—an elderly woman, perhaps another traveler drawn to the solitude. The quiet, the isolation—it reminded me of a scene from a game, the kind where the world is vast, yet empty. The colorful two-story houses dotted the landscape, standing defiant against the elements. But the wind grew stronger, the daylight dimmed—time urged me back to my hotel.

The Final Hours

The following morning, the storm clouds had retreated beyond the distant mountains. The sun painted the sky with warmth, casting golden light upon the waves.

Before heading to the airport, I returned to the waterfront, witnessing an entirely different spectacle—calm (relatively) waters, gulls singing their songs, and the horizon shimmering under the morning sun. Yet the wind still whispered a reminder: linger too long, and I would miss my flight.

Departure and Reflection

At the airport, the exhaustion of the past five days settled in. As I made my way to the boarding gate, my gaze caught a striking mural—a massive depiction of Silver Sable from the Marvel universe, painted across ceramic tiles. A curious farewell from the land of fire and ice.

As the plane ascended, a quiet ache filled my chest. Iceland had taken a piece of my soul, but in return, it had given me something greater—memories, stories, and the warmth of a journey that would remain with me for a lifetime.

Final Words

Even if you know no one in Eve Online, you are part of the sandbox. Your deeds most definitely affected someone who also attended the festival, and that means—you have memories and a different perspective to share.

Like I mentioned in Part 3, the most bonding moment was actually the Pub Crawl event. A group of loners became friends, and in the following days, I saw them sitting together, even at the closing ceremony. EVE Online is a friendship machine, and EVE Fanfest is a massive catalyst.

Do not be a fool like me, who delayed this trip for 20 years.

o/ Fly safe… to Iceland!

A Glimpse of Iceland

No words can truly capture the breathtaking landscapes of this land of fire and ice. The vast, untamed wilderness, the towering cliffs, the endless skies and brutal ocean—all of it is best seen, not just described.
