My Tier List of Favorite Ships for Solo PvP in Eve Online

Creating a definitive list of the best solo PvP ships in Eve Online is nearly impossible—too much depends on personal preferences, expectations, and the environment (or how well you can control it). Personally, I tend to fly in groups or with my fleet of alts rather than going solo.

Nonetheless, my friends over at Justabout asked me to share my favorite ships, so I figured—why not stir up some controversy? Everyone’s going to have strong opinions about it anyway. But let’s be clear: this isn’t a list of the best solo PvP ships. It’s purely based on my personal experience, built over years of flying in Eve Online. Love it or hate it, this is simply what I’ve flown and enjoyed enough to share.

Methodology

For once, this isn’t a numbers-driven analysis. With over 20 years of experience, trying to apply science here would be a losing battle. Instead, I went with gut feeling—basing this tier list on a simple yet crucial metric: fun per ISK.

S-Tier: The Best of the Best

Gnosis – The Ultimate Wild Card

Gnosis in Eve Online – a versatile battlecruiser with unpredictable fits, making it a wildcard in solo PvP combat.

Kicking off the S-tier is… the Gnosis! This ship is criminally underrated—often dismissed as a “rookie ship” when, in reality, it’s one of the most versatile hulls out there. It’s cheap, very agile (literally), and, most importantly, always a surprise. You never know what weapons it’s packing or how it’s tanked. I’ve even seen hull tanks with ASB bait setups.

With six mid slots, it offers a full rack of utility, thanks to its combat probe bonus it becomes a hunter, it can even function as a solo gate camper—boosting its lock speed to catch sub-3s ships or applying a triple scram to snag DSTs. It’s a ship that thrives on unpredictability, and in solo PvP, that’s a massive advantage.

Phoenix – Yes, Really!

Phoenix in Eve Online – a capital ship capable of racking up dozens of sub-cap kills before going down in glorious battle.

Next up: the Phoenix. Yes, you heard that right—it’s a fantastic solo PvP ship that can rack up a lot of sub-capital kills. Some pilots have managed to take down 50-100 ships before finally losing theirs. Sure, you’ll likely lose in the end, but the amount of fun you’ll have makes it absolutely worth it.

The Navy version? Even better. If you don’t believe me, check out this video for inspiration. Such combat will give a hot topic during a Pub Crawl at Fanfest or just brag in the local bar.

Loki – The Strategic Phantom

Last in the S-tier is the Loki, Minmatar’s Tier 3 Strategic Cruiser. Out of all the ships in Eve Online, I’d say the Loki is the most versatile. Thanks to its subsystem bonuses and adaptability, you can tweak it for different situations in just minutes at the depo.

Loki in Eve Online – a Minmatar strategic cruiser, adaptable and deadly, excelling in both offense and battlefield control.

That versatility is why I rank it so high—it can shift roles with ease. I also have a very low loss rate with the Loki, mainly due to its long-range webs. They let you control the battlefield and, most importantly, disengage when a fight isn’t going your way. And in solo PvP, the ability to escape is almost as valuable as the ability to kill.

A-Tier: Powerful but Pricey

Lachesis – The Battlefield Puppeteer

The Lachesis is the ship I’ve flown the most throughout my career. While it’s a fantastic EWAR asset for any fleet, it also works surprisingly well in solo PvP. The ability to pounce right on top of an enemy and dictate the battlefield lets you control your opponent’s movements while keeping yourself alive if things go south.

Kikimora – The Fragile But Deadly Kiter

Kikimora in Eve Online – a deadly kiting destroyer known for its high DPS and agility in solo PvP battles.

The Kikimora isn’t cheap—especially for such a fragile hull—but for around 200 million ISK, you get an excellent kiting ship capable of soloing most targets, including cruisers. If you can manage its positioning and keep your distance, this little demon is a menace on the battlefield.

Machariel – The ISK-Burning Powerhouse

Machariel in Eve Online – a powerhouse battleship with speed, firepower, and tank, perfect for taking on multiple opponents.

A well-known classic, the Machariel delivers a massive punch, moves fast for its size, and is both durable and deadly. In the right hands, it can tear through small gangs with ease. That said, it’s quite pricey, so if you want to burn ISK in style—this is your ship.

This faction cruiser is an absolute menace for just 55 million ISK. It packs massive damage, decent tank, and enough speed to jump in, annihilate a target, and escape before reinforcements arrive. One of its best uses? Baiting and Soloing mission-running Marauders.

Thanks to its ability to permarun three neutralizers while still dealing solid damage, it has a nasty habit of dismantling Kronoses and Paladins. The recent nerf toned down its raw damage, but it’s still a fantastic pick for obliterating high-value targets.

B-Tier: Strong, but with Trade-Offs

Vargur – The High-Risk, High-Reward Marauder

Leading the B-tier is the Vargur, Minmatar’s signature Marauder. A well-known solo PvP machine, but like most Marauders, it’s expensive and requires piloting skill to master. However, if you know what you’re doing and pick your fights wisely, the Vargur can rack up a ton of killmarks and provide an insane amount of fun.

Hurricane Fleet Issue – The Brawler

Hurricane Fleet Issue in Eve Online – a brawling battlecruiser with strong tank and autocannon firepower, great for solo skirmishes.

The Hurricane Fleet Issue is a fantastic brawler—a great entry point for pilots looking to gain experience before moving up to a Machariel or Vargur. It strikes a nice balance between tank and firepower, capable of soaking up damage while its autocannons keep firing even if the ship is completely dry on cap. A solid pick for those wanting to learn the ropes of solo PvP without breaking the bank.

Scythe – The Ultimate Bait Ship

Scythe in Eve Online – a deceptive T1 logistics cruiser, refitted for combat and surprising opponents in solo PvP engagements.

Yes, you read that right—a T1 logistics cruiser for solo PvP. Most opponents will assume you’re a stranded logi that lost its fleet—an easy kill. But if you fit your Scythe as a combat ship, the joke’s on them.

With the signature and speed of a destroyer but the HP and slots of a cruiser, the Scythe can tank well while dishing out unexpected damage. Its capacitor regen is nearly twice as good as most standard cruisers, letting it outlast many opponents. The only real downside? Its low power grid and CPU make fitting a challenge.

Hecate – The High-Speed Assassin

Hecate in Eve Online – a high-speed tactical destroyer with brutal firepower, capable of shredding cruisers in solo PvP.

The Hecate is another solo PvP classic—fast, deadly, and an absolute blast to fly. With the right fit and solid piloting, it can take down anything cruiser-sized or smaller. Its mobility and raw damage output make it a strong choice for pilots who enjoy high-speed skirmishes. Some of my friends even run it polarized with a dual-prop setup, allowing them to jump in and, with 1,500 DPS, delete their target before the prey’s friends can even align to warp.

C-Tier: High Potential, High Risk

Curse – A Double-Edged Blade

Opening the C-tier, we have the Curse. Against the right opponents, this ship is deadly. Its immunity to directional scan and powerful cap warfare abilities let it control multiple enemies at once, making it a great solo PvP ship in the right hands.

However, unlike the Lachesis, if things go wrong, escaping is extremely difficult. Its lack of agility and reliance on controlling others means that once you’re caught, you’re likely done for.

Vagabond – The Agile Brawler

The Vagabond is a great Heavy Assault Cruiser (HAC) for solo PvP. It has solid speed for closing the gap, excellent shield resistances, and a bonus to shield boosting, making it capable of tanking incoming damage well. It’s a solid choice, but not as dominant as some of the higher-tier options.

Proteus – A Versatile but Weaker Loki

Proteus in Eve Online – a strategic cruiser with multiple fitting options, ideal for ambush tactics and versatile solo PvP setups.

The Proteus is another strong Tier 3 Strategic Cruiser, though not quite on the level of the Loki in terms of versatility. That said, it still has plenty of tools to pick targets, obliterate them quickly, and escape before reinforcements arrive. While powerful, it lacks the adaptability that pushes the Loki into higher tiers.

Daredevil – High-Risk, High-Speed Interceptor

The Daredevil isn’t the most durable ship, but it more than makes up for it with blistering speed and a devastating punch. It excels at intercepting and eliminating targets before they can react.

However, the reason it’s placed in C-tier is simple—it’s incredibly hard to master. It requires quick reflexes, and even the smallest mistake can turn it into a floating wreck. It’s a fantastic choice for skilled pilots, but not forgiving enough to rank any higher.

D-Tier: Niche Picks

Just because these ships are in D-tier doesn’t mean they’re bad—they’re still great for solo PvP. The fact that they made it onto this list out of 393 playable ships is already a testament to their viability. However, they either have a steep learning curve, major weaknesses, or are too easily countered.

Rook – The ECM Relic

After the ECM changes, the Rook is no longer a top-tier solo choice. However, it still has a ton of mid slots, decent damage, and D-scan immunity, making it somewhat viable in niche situations.

Pilgrim – The Cloaky Assassin with a Downside

Pilgrim in Eve Online – a covert ops cruiser specializing in cap warfare and ambush tactics, striking from the shadows in solo PvP.

Covert ops gameplay has its appeal, and the Pilgrim can be deadly when used right. But its presence on D-scan during combat tends to attract unnecessary third-party attention—something you really don’t want in solo PvP.

Bellicose – The Ship No One Remembers

The Bellicose is often overlooked because… well, people forget what it even does. But with the right fit—like dual webs and a 1600mm plate—it can still hold its own.

Hurricane – The Budget Cane

A lighter version of the Fleet Hurricane, with lower damage and EHP. You need to be much pickier with engagements, but it can still get the job done.

Kestrel – The Surprising Entry Ship

A perfect entry-level solo PvP ship. With good piloting, it can even take down some cruisers—a feat that surprises a lot of opponents.

Hyperion – A Tanky Dream (That I Couldn’t Make Work)

Hyperion in Eve Online – a heavily armored battleship with triple reps, capable of tanking entire fleets in solo PvP.

I’ve never had great success getting solo kills in a Hyperion, but I’ve seen others triple-rep them and tank entire small fleets. The potential is there—just not for me.

Nereus – The Meme That Actually Works

Nereus in Eve Online – an industrial ship turned meme-worthy PvP brawler, frustrating opponents with unexpected tankiness.

An industrial in a PvP list? Absolutely. The Nereus is a solid solo PvP ship, and watching multiple cruisers fail to break its tank is a guaranteed source of laughs. Honestly, this ship deserves its own post.

Celestis – Another “Wait, What Does That Do?” Ship

Like the Bellicose, people often forget what the Celestis is even supposed to do. That alone can be a key to victory in EVE. It was probably the ship I flew the most in my early PvP days.

Sleipnir – A Fleet Cane on Steroids (But Pricey)

The Sleipnir is like a Fleet Hurricane, but better. The problem? It’s also much more expensive. For this kind of gameplay, I still prefer the Vagabond.

Federation Navy Comet – The Budget Daredevil

Think of it as the poor man’s Daredevil—for 1/12 of the price. It’s actually a great ship to burn through a couple of before upgrading to the real thing.

Venture – The “Wait, It’s Not Mining?” Ship

Venture in Eve Online – a mining ship turned PvP trickster, using warp core strength and unexpected combat fits to outplay enemies.

A mining ship in a solo PvP list? Yep. The Venture has one big trick—+2 warp core strength—which lets it pull off some unexpected escapes and surprises. Currently, there are 752 solo killmails on zKillboard in the last 90 days! Just be very careful in combat and keep an eye on D-scan.

Arazu – The Cloaky Tackler

Similar to the Pilgrim and Curse, once you decloak in an active local, you need to be very careful. Its damage output is pitiful, but it’s good enough for catching Asteros and Herons.

Maulus Navy Issue – The Surprise Warden

I have a community fit in-game called Melamori’s Surprise Warden—a 10MN beast with autocannons and a four-point scram. It’s dirt cheap and will definitely catch enemies off-guard!

Warping Out

And that’s my list of 28 favorite ships for solo PvP in Eve Online! You might be wondering why there are so many Minmatar ships on this list. Well, there are a few solid reasons:

  • Autocannons – Instant damage application with excellent reach thanks to Barrage ammo.
  • Capless Weapon System – In solo PvP, every unit of capacitor counts, and Minmatar ships let you dedicate all of it to active modules instead of weapons.
  • Speed & Signature Radius – Minmatar ships are generally fast with low signatures, making speed tanking a crucial advantage. Reducing incoming damage through sheer movement is often the difference between life and death, whether you’re burning in or out of a fight.

I kept this post compact rather than diving deep into every ship, but if you want more details—or my fit for a specific one—drop a comment below, and I’ll gladly share!
