Well Timed Update
The “EVE Online: Legion” update Version 23.01 landed today, September 9, marking the latest milestone in New Eden’s evolution. If you missed it, “Legion” was first announced during Fanfest 2025 and went live a few weeks later on May 27, introducing two new ships and hefty new features like player-made missions called Freelance Jobs. I’ve covered the expansion intensively in my recap and through several interviews with directors and producers such as CCP Burger and CCP Rattati. Today’s patch rolls out a new iteration of those features, continuing to expand the roadmap and reshape the game’s balance.

Patch Notes Worth Your Time
The notes for this update are massive and meaningful – honestly, reading them always feels a bit like a Christmas present unwrapping. There’s easily a couple hundred lines of tweaks and changes, but that’s just the surface. I really recommend grabbing a cup of tea and going through them yourself to see which adjustments directly affect your playstyle. You can find the full Legion patch notes here.

What’s nice this time is that it isn’t just a flat list of numbers – it reads almost like a dev blog, with CCP Games explaining the reasoning behind the changes. That context makes it a surprisingly engaging read.
To give you a taste: this patch is a huge balance pass – drone assist caps cut down, armor rigs shifted to agility penalties, a brand-new Advanced Armor Layering skill, ESS mechanics reshuffled, Bastion module rework, Tactical Destroyer buffs, Ferox Navy Issue toned down, medium and large railguns reined in, and reworks across ships like the Apocalypse, Maelstrom, Navy hulls, and pirate lines. Add to that new faction warfare standings, insurgency tweaks, highsec safety adjustments, sovereignty QoL upgrades, and industry/Metenox changes (yes, nerfed further).
That said, a few changes strike me as genuine game-changers, and I want to dig into them below.
Character Resculpt – Now With Gender Swap
One of the quieter but actually massive changes in this patch is the Character Resculpt update. Capsuleers can now swap between male and female body models using a Pilot’s Body Resculpt Certificate from the NES. On top of that, every account gets a free resculpt token bundled with the weekly 15,000 SP claim. Normally this is Omega-only, but until September 16 even Alpha clones can grab it. The token itself has been upgraded to support full gender changes.
From a lore perspective, it makes perfect sense – EVE is literally about cloning and body swaps, often daily. So why not let pilots customize their avatars more freely? This is especially meaningful if you’ve ever bought a character off the official bazaar and wanted to give it a look that feels more like yours.
To complete the circle, though, CCP would need to allow name changes as well. I get their stance – a pilot’s name is tied to history and killboards – but there are ways around it. Even a “Known Aliases” section in the bio would do the trick, while letting people finally fix those all-lowercase names or typos they made 20 years ago. C’mon CCP, do it!
Highsec Safety Pass – FOBs and Lancers Gone
Another notable change in this update is the removal of Autothysian Lancers from highsec and the relocation of Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) from highsec into lowsec, where they’ll now appear more frequently.
On paper, it’s clearly a quality-of-life tweak – FOBs were notorious for ambushing rookie miners, and losing your first Venture to NPCs you didn’t even know existed wasn’t exactly a welcoming moment. But at the same time, those little surprises gave highsec some texture. The occasional diamond rat or Drifter patrol added a sense that New Eden was alive, even in empire space.
For some solo players and small corps, FOBs were even an end-game PvE challenge – something to prepare for and brag about beating. Instead of removing them outright, CCP could have gone for a softer touch: adjusting initial aggro so Ventures aren’t insta-locked, or reducing the early-wave DPS so rookies have a chance to react and learn.
Highsec shouldn’t feel sterile – we want the chatter, the oddities, the sense that things are happening around us as we travel the empires.
Freelance Jobs – A Love Letter to Logi (and Vendettas)
Freelance Jobs just got a serious upgrade with three new contribution methods: Destroy Capsuleer, Remote Boost Shield, and Remote Repair Armor. In practice, this means corporations can now hand out contracts not just for hauling or mining, but for hunting specific players, or even rewarding logistics pilots for keeping fleets alive.
For logi pilots, this feels like a long-overdue nod – finally some structured recognition. (But seriously, when do we get logi killmails?!)
The “Destroy Capsuleer” option is the real wild card. It’s basically the vindictive vendetta tool EVE players have dreamed of for two decades. How it plays out remains to be seen, but the potential for bait, traps, and third-party griefing is enormous. Even two supposedly peaceful mining corps sharing a system could suddenly find themselves at war by proxy, hiring outsiders to blow each other up.
Fun times ahead indeed.
Wormholes – New Paths and Clearer Signals
Wormholers definitely got something to celebrate this patch. C4 systems now have new wandering connections to highsec, lowsec, and nullsec, giving residents more content opportunities and opening up routes for outsiders to stumble in. Add to that clearer and more transparent wormhole information windows – lifetime, mass stability, even a new one-hour warning – and the landscape just got a lot easier to read.
For rookies and day-trippers, this is a gift: you don’t need years of experience to know when a wormhole is about to collapse. But let’s be real – veteran wormholers can already tell a wormhole’s lifespan by smell. Hehe.
Last but Not Least – Stormbringer’s Dream Slot
The Stormbringer (and the Skybreaker) just received an extra utility high slot, YES! On paper, it looks like a small tweak, but for the Stormbringer it’s a seismic shift. Readers of my earlier pieces know I’ve been campaigning for this change for a while (#bringStormbringer2highslots). At Fanfest I even pitched it directly to some devs – arguing that more pilots would fly these ships if they had the fitting flexibility.

And here we are: dream realized. This single slot opens the door to exploration fits with a core probe launcher, PvP doctrines with added NOS or neut, even Abyssal runners considering a tractor or cap tool. More options, more explosions.
And here’s a tip: keep a close eye on the market in the next few hours. Skins, Vorton Projectors, ammo, and damage mods tied to these hulls have razor-thin supply, and demand will spike the moment more players digest these notes. If you’re quick, it’s an opportunity to pocket a few billion ISK before the market stabilizes.

Undocking
There’s a lot more in this patch to poke at, and I’m pretty sure Reddit is already mid-QQ. Slot swaps and percentage tweaks are expected. The bigger sting is on Marauders – the Micro Jump Drive (MJD) reactivation cooldown bonus is gone, which will slow down the teleport-tap gameplay those hulls leaned on. I’m not worried. The real verdict won’t come from forum tears volume but from data – ship usage, survival rates, and explosions. That’s what CCP ultimately bases decisions on, so keep that in mind when you undock.
As for dreams, I’ve got one more on my list – a SOE capital. Maybe December 2025, eh?! =) Who knows. For now, fly curious, test the edges, and let the killboards tell the truth.
o7, warping off.
