How to Move Your Base in Nightingale: Efficient Step-by-Step Guide

Introduction

The question of how to move your base in Nightingale almost instantly turns into how to relocate all your lovely gathered resources without losing anything in the process. In my previous Nightingale guides, I covered the best base locations and explained all forms of fast travel and teleportation to save time when exploring realms or gathering resources. Now, if you’ve decided to relocate your starter base to a different spot or realm, the process of moving your Estate Cairn, utilizing portals, and linking Lodestars is simple enough. However, the real challenge is moving all the materials and items you’ve gathered on your journey. This guide covers the available options for moving your belongings efficiently in Nightingale.

Before You Begin

No matter which relocation method you choose, there are a few critical steps to keep in mind to make your move smoother and minimize the number of trips required. Here’s what you need to decide before moving your base in Nightingale:

  1. Decide if you want to move all tiers of materials or only the items you’re actively using. It might save time to leave behind low-tier materials that you no longer need.
  2. Determine whether to take extra materials with you to place temporary storage at your new base, or disassemble your current containers to carry all your items in one go, then re-create the storage at the new location.
  3. If you want to minimize the number of trips, remove all gear and tools from yourself and your companion. This frees up additional space for transporting items: your character 75 slots, companion 20 slots and Pepys Box 24 slots, that gives you a total of 119 slots per run.

Resource Movement Within the Same Realm

If you’ve found a better location within the same realm—perhaps trading your first camp for a stunning harbour on the coast—here’s how you can move everything without much hassle:

  1. Place a Lodestar: Set one Lodestar right next to your current storage area to quickly access your boxes after teleporting.
  2. Prepare Temporary Storage: If needed, take materials to place storage such as Voyager’s Steamer Trunks (or another option) in your new base location.
  3. Load Yourself and Your Companion: Fill yourself, start with materials needed for Lodestar and Pepys Box. Top-up rest of yours and your companion slots, and the Pepys Box with materials and items for transport.
  4. Set Up at the New Location: Walk to your new base, place your Lodestar, and set up any new storage you need.
  5. Transport and Repeat: Unload your materials, teleport back, and repeat the process until everything is moved.

Moving Resources and Your Base to Another Realm

If you’re relocating your base to a new realm—especially following strategies #2 and #3 from my Nightingale Base Location Guide—you’ll need to follow a slightly different approach. There are two main methods, depending on whether you want to register your new realm base before or after moving your items.

Method 1: Using Portals While Keeping Your Estate Cairn at the Old Base

  1. Set Up a Portal: Place a portal from your old base to your new base realm directly inside your storage room.
  2. Gather Storage Materials: Bring along materials for Sturgy Dressers (55-slot storage) or break down existing containers so you can recreate them at your new location.
  3. Load and Transport: Fill your character, companion, and Pepys Box with items, travel to the new realm, and set up storage there.
  4. Repeat as Necessary: Teleport back to the old base using the portal, load more items, and transport them to the new realm until everything is moved.
  5. Move Estate Cairn: Once all items are transferred, relocate your Estate Cairn to your new base.

If you accidentally close the portal (by pressing “Close Portal”), don’t panic! Simply craft and place the same realm card again, and you’ll load into the same instance. The only way to permanently lose all items in a realm is by placing the same card, ticking the “Reset Realm” box, and confirming the erase action in the dialog window.

Method 2: Using The Crossways as Temporary Storage

  1. Place a Lodestar: Set up a Lodestar at your current base, positioned near your storage for easy access.
  2. Teleport to The Crossways: Use the Lodestar to teleport to The Crossways and place a temporary storage chest (such as a 55-slot shelf) and a Pepys Box within easy reach.
  3. Start Transferring Items: Return to your base using the “Travel to Respite” option. Load yourself, your companion, and the Pepys Box with items.
  4. Unload at The Crossways: Teleport back to The Crossways and unload the items into your temporary storage, place more boxes.
  5. Repeat the Process: Continue teleporting between your base and The Crossways, loading and unloading items until all the materials you want to move are stored at The Crossways.
  6. Move to the New Base: Travel to your new base location and set up the Estate Cairn (make sure to activate it), along with the Pepys Box and your storage containers.
  7. Final Transfers: Start moving items by “trave to The Crossways” to your new base “Travel to Respite”.
  8. Repeat Until Done: Continue the process until all items are transferred. Once complete, enjoy settling into your new home!

I personally used this method and set up an archive-like storage at The Crossways, where I left lower-tier items. This keeps my main storage and crafting UI uncluttered, while still giving me quick access to those materials whenever I need them with just a few clicks.

Extra Tips for Moving Out in Nightingale

  • Repair Before Demolition: If you plan to dismantle any workstations or buildings, make sure they’re fully repaired. Slightly damaged structures yield fewer resources when dismantled, so it’s wise to repair everything first for maximum material recovery. Give a hammer to your companion so they could do it while you sorting items.
  • Moving While Overloaded: If you’re overburdened with materials and need to walk long distances, use climbing picks and their grapple ability to bypass weight limits.
  • Keeping Your Companion Close: If your companion tends to wander away, equip them with a lantern to keep them close and within interaction proximity. For more details, check out my Nightingale Ultimate Lantern Guide.
  • Start light: For your first trip to the new base location, avoid carrying heavy items like rocks or wood. Instead, focus on transporting lighter materials such as gems, fibres, or other resources that take up inventory slots but don’t add much weight.
